Balance bike or trike first?

The short answer

A trike first, from about one, because it teaches pedalling and steering with you holding the handle. A balance bike from about two and a half, once they walk confidently and can hold their own weight, because it teaches balance for a two-wheeler. The skills are different and the ages barely overlap.

What each one teaches

  • Trike: the idea that pushing makes it move, alternating legs, steering around things, and sitting still for a walk. From about one.
  • Balance bike: balance, gliding, and confidence on two wheels. From about two and a half, when their legs are long enough to sit and walk it.

Why the order matters

A balance bike at eighteen months mostly gets carried. A trike at eighteen months gets scooted along the ground, which is exactly the practice they need. By the time they are ready to glide, they already pedal and steer, so the two-wheeler comes quickly.

Where the Wonder™ fits

It covers the stroller and trike years on one frame, six months to three. When they move to the balance bike, the trike is handed down and the Xtend scooter picks up the ride-on years.

Common questions

Do they need a trike if they will get a balance bike?

A trike teaches pedalling and steering earlier, with you holding on. A balance bike does not teach pedalling at all.

What age for a balance bike?

Around two and a half, when they can sit on it with feet flat and walk it.

Which trike for a two-year-old?

The Wonder™ or Wonder+™. They pedal more than they are pushed, so the recline matters less and the lighter carry matters more.
