General guidance for parents, not a clinical checklist. Every child moves through these at their own pace. If something worries you, your maternal and child health nurse is the right first call.

6 to 9 months

Sitting, with support

Most babies sit with help at six months and unaided a little later. They want to see the world but tire fast and slump forward.

What helps. A seat that reclines to 140° so the head is supported. Short outings. A five-point harness done up every time.
10 to 12 months

Sitting up, holding on

Now they sit unaided and grab anything in reach. Handlebars, especially. They still cannot steer or pedal, but they want to feel involved.

What helps. Unlock the child handlebar so they can hold it while steering stays with you. Canopy up in the sun.
12 to 18 months

Walking, and pushing with their feet

First steps, then wobbly walking. On a trike they scoot with their feet against the ground rather than pedal.

What helps. Footrest up so their feet can reach the ground when you stop. Let them push along on flat ground with you holding the handle.
18 months to 2 years

Finding the pedals

Feet find the pedals and push, but usually one at a time and often backwards first. This is the training window.

What helps. Pedals on, canopy off, parent handle still attached. Praise the push, not the distance. Ten minutes is a good session.
2 to 3 years

Pedalling with purpose

Continuous pedalling, steering around things on purpose, and a strong opinion about where you are going. They still tire on the way home.

What helps. Parent handle off for the ride out, back on for the ride home. Then it folds into the boot. After three, the Xtend scooter picks up where the trike leaves off.
