Everything parents ask about smarTrike stroller trikes in Australia, from which model suits which age through to warranty, delivery and airline travel.
Five models, two ranges. These are the questions that narrow it down fastest.
Start with age. Under 10 months, only the Wonder max is suitable, because it is the only model with a seat that reclines to 140 degrees. From 10 months all five fit, and the decision comes down to how often you will use it. Occasional and travel use points to the Wind range, daily use points to the Wonder range. Our buying guide walks through it in three questions.
Both convert through the same four modes and share the same patented 360 degree steering, safety bumper bar and 5-point harness. The Wonder range uses better seat fabrics, upgraded wheels and a sturdier frame, because it is built for daily use across two and a half years rather than occasional and travel use. The Wind range is the entry point at $249.99.
The Wonder and Wonder+ both suit 10 months and up. The Wonder is the lightest in the Wonder range at 5.9 kg and the entry model at $389.00, with a mesh seat and a 2-stage canopy. The Wonder+ is $489.00 and 6.42 kg, adding a 3-stage canopy and an extra-large seat for longer days in the sun. The Wonder max is $579.00 and the only one suitable from 6 months, because its seat reclines to 140 degrees.
The Wind+ adds a low step-in frame so your child can climb in themselves, an adjustable child handlebar that moves as they grow, and detachable pedals with a footrest. It also uses slightly better seat fabrics. The Wind is $249.99 in Aqua, Blush or Black, and the Wind+ is $299.99 in Black.
The Wonder max. It is the only model in the range designed from 6 months, because the seat reclines to 140 degrees, which supports a baby who cannot yet sit unaided. Every other model starts at 10 months.
All five suit a one year old. Choose on how long your outings are. Short walks favour the Wonder at 5.9 kg or the Wind at 5.6 kg. Long days in the sun favour the Wonder+. Children who still nap on the move favour the Wonder max.
The Wind at 5.6 kg. Across the range: Wind 5.6 kg, Wind+ 5.9 kg, Wonder 5.9 kg, Wonder+ 6.42 kg and Wonder max 6.95 kg. Every model is under 7 kg on a lightweight aluminium frame.
They do different jobs. A pram carries your child. A stroller trike carries them and then teaches them to ride, which matters most between 1 and 3 when toddlers want to move independently but tire quickly and cannot yet pedal a bike. A smarTrike replaces a second stroller, a first trike and a balance-bike stage with one product.
How the four modes work and when to switch between them.
Stroller mode, where your child is harnessed and supported and you steer from the parent handle. Trike mode, once they can hold the handlebars, where they ride and you keep control. Training mode, as their feet reach the pedals, where they power the trike and you guide direction. Then free riding, where the parent handle comes off and the trike is entirely theirs.
There is no fixed age. Follow your child rather than the calendar. Stay in stroller mode until they can sit unaided and hold the handlebars comfortably, often around 12 to 15 months. Move to training mode once their feet reach the pedals, commonly around 18 months to 2 years. Free riding usually comes somewhere between 2 and 3.
Yes. The patented 360 degree steering system is designed for one-handed control, including reversing through turns without lifting the trike. It is the feature the whole smarTrike range was designed around.
Yes, once they are ready. Training mode lets them pedal while you still steer, and free riding hands them full control of both pedals and steering.
On the Wind+ the pedals and footrest detach without tools, so you can take them off while you are still pushing and fit them the moment their feet reach. On other models the pedals lock while your child is being pushed.
Wipe the frame with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Full care instructions are in the manual for your model, which you can download here.
Folding, storage and taking one on a plane.
The compact fold is suitable for carry-on on many airlines. Cabin baggage limits vary by airline, fare type and aircraft, so always check with your airline before travel to make sure it is compatible. Many Australian carriers also allow prams and strollers to be checked free of charge at the gate.
The Wonder folds to 54 x 25 x 34 cm, the Wonder+ to 52 x 25.5 x 41 cm and the Wonder max to 54.5 x 26.5 x 38 cm. Folded dimensions for the Wind and Wind+ are TBC. Every model folds in seconds with no tools and nothing to detach.
About three seconds, in one motion, with no tools and no disassembly. Folded, it stands up on its own rather than falling over.
Yes, comfortably. Every model folds to roughly the footprint of a small suitcase, so it fits a boot with the shopping already in it, or a hall cupboard in a flat.
Certification, harnesses and what is fitted as standard.
Yes. smarTrike stroller trikes are certified to stroller safety standards rather than toy standards, which is the higher bar in child mobility products. That certification does not change with the price, so the entry model carries the same standard as the premium one.
Every model has a 5-point harness, a safety bumper bar with press-button release, a patented shock-absorbing front wheel and a rear brake. The Wonder max adds padded harness straps, and its seat reclines to 140 degrees so a younger baby is properly supported.
No. The safety engineering is the same across the range. What changes between the Wind and Wonder ranges is seat fabrics, wheels and frame construction, all of which affect comfort and durability rather than safety certification.
TBC. Check the manual for your model, which you can download here.
